I took this photo in the eastern Sierras, off Highway 395, at the Owens Gorge Road. I love those mailboxes and every time we travel to the Sierras, we drive by them just to see them!

ABC Wednesday 111208 Q is for

Quail! We found this little quail in a tree at the Living Desert Reserve in Palm Desert, CA several years ago. We used to have quail in our neighborhood 30 years ago. Just a couple of years ago, there actually was one pair that were STILL in our area! They have moved away due to all the housing developments, but up at the LDR and in the mountains, they are plentiful. This is one of the few photos I actually have of one of our desert quail!

I remember a trip to Palm Desert from my childhood. I think it may have been the only actual drive there I remember. I must have read a lot and not paid attention to my surroundings. We were on our way home through the mountains and a mama quail started out across the road with fifteen little ones following her. She got part way, thought better of it, and headed back. Some of the little ones did not make it.

Sorry, sad story! But that image follows me to this day any time I see a quail.
